Our tailored educational visits offer a unique, hands-on learning experience, bringing key curriculum topics to life right here on our working farm in the beautiful North York Moors.
Discover, Explore, Understand: Your Farm Visit Journey
At New Sheepfold Farm, we believe that the best learning happens through doing. Our educational visits are designed to be dynamic, hands-on, and deeply engaging, offering a unique opportunity to connect children with real-world farming and the natural environment. We work closely with educators to create a visit that perfectly complements your curriculum objectives and inspires young minds.
Discover, Explore, Understand: Your Farm Visit Journey
We can tailor our experiences to align with key curriculum areas and age groups, fostering curiosity and deeper understanding. Typical themes and learning opportunities include:
- Where Food Comes From: Journey from ‘farm to fork’! Students will gain a practical understanding of how our grass-fed beef and lamb are produced, exploring the role of livestock in the food chain, sustainable farming practices, and the importance of healthy eating.
- The Environment & Biodiversity: Step into a living classroom! We’ll explore our regenerative farming practices, observe wildlife habitats (like our ponds and wildflower areas), and discuss our role in protecting the precious North York Moors National Park. Learn about ecosystems, soil health, and environmental stewardship firsthand.
- Animal Care & Life Cycles: Meet our friendly flock of sheep and our majestic Shorthorn cattle. Students can learn about animal welfare, observe their behaviours, understand their basic needs, and discover the fascinating life cycles of farm animals (seasonal highlights like lambing can be discussed!).
- Rural Studies & Local Heritage: Uncover the rich history of farming in the North York Moors and its impact on the landscape and local communities. Learn about traditional farming methods and how they’ve evolved.
Hands-On & Interactive Activities:
Our visits incorporate a variety of activities to suit different learning styles, such as:
- Guided farm walks exploring fields and natural habitats.
- Sensory experiences – touching wool, smelling fresh hay, listening to farm sounds.
- Interactive discussions and Q&A sessions with the farmer.
- Opportunities for observation and recording data (e.g., counting animals, identifying plants).
Each visit is crafted to be a memorable and impactful learning adventure!

Planning Your Visit: Essential Information for Teachers
We aim to make organising your educational visit to New Sheepfold Farm as straightforward as possible. Here’s some key information to help you plan:
Group Sizes & Supervision:
- We can accommodate groups of 36 children per visit.
- To ensure a safe and engaging experience, we require appropriate adult supervision. We recommend a minimum ratio of 1 adult for every 10 children to accompany the group. Please check your school’s specific policy.
- On-Farm Facilities:
- Clean and accessible toilet facilities are available on-site.
- Our designated picnic areas offer a pleasant spot for packed lunches, with both sheltered and open-air options.
- Safety First: Risk Assessments & Pre-Visits:
- Your students’ safety is our paramount concern. We conduct thorough risk assessments for all farm activities and will provide you with all necessary safety documentation well in advance of your visit.
- We highly encourage teachers and group leaders to arrange a pre-visit to the farm. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the site, discuss your specific learning objectives, and undertake your own risk assessment.
- Accessibility:
- We strive to make our farm accessible to all. While some areas of a working farm may present challenges, please discuss any specific accessibility needs with us when you enquire. We will do our best to accommodate your requirements.
- Pricing & Booking:
- The trip is free for the school, but you must be here for the minimum of 3 hours and provide your own food and transport
