Shropshire Sheep – Nature’s Orchard Keepers
Our flock of Shropshire sheep play a special role at New Sheepfold Farm. Unlike most breeds, Shropshire sheep naturally have very little interest in eating the bark or foliage of established trees, making them ideal partners in our tree planting areas.
By carefully grazing beneath the trees, they help control grass and weeds without the need for herbicides or repeated mowing. This creates healthier trees, improves biodiversity and allows us to manage the land in a more sustainable way.
The trees provide shelter and shade for the sheep, while the sheep help care for the trees, a perfect example of farming and nature working together

Look out for…
* Their distinctive dark face and legs.
* Calm, friendly temperament. But are spooked by strangers ….
* How they graze the grass beneath the trees while leaving the trees themselves untouched.
Did you Know?
Combining trees and livestock is known as silvopasture, an ancient farming practice now recognised as one of the most sustainable ways to farm. The trees provide shelter, store carbon and support wildlife, while the sheep naturally manage the grass below.
